Race to the Finish Line for Places in Etape Caledonia 2009
With interest in cycling in the UK at fever pitch this year following Chris Hoy’s sweeping wins at the 2008 Olympics, it will come as no surprise that IMG, the organisers of Scotland’s top cycling event, the Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia, have announced that they expect this year’s event to attract a record number of participants and spectators.

The 81 mile cycle challenge, now in its third year, is set against the stunning backdrop of Highland Perthshire, and has already attracted 2700 participants to sign up, a 35% increase on last year’s participation.

Organisers will cap entries at 3500 participants. Around 10,000 spectators are also expected to flock to Highland Perthshire during the Etape Caledonia weekend on 16th and 17th May.

The Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia remains the only closed road cycle event in the UK and has firmly established itself as a top class sporting event in Scotland’s calendar. This year, it has also featured as part of the Scottish Government’s Homecoming Scotland campaign with firm support from Event Scotland and Perth and Kinross Council.

The 2009 event has attracted top sponsors such as Macmillan Cancer Care, Adidas, Powerbar, The Evening Standard, Cycling Plus, Women’s Fitness, Wiggle and Mavic. The event organisers are confident that it will continue to go from strength to strength.

This year the 81-mile race starts and finishes in Pitlochry, winding around Loch Rannoch and Loch Tummel, with a total ascent of 1,949m.

Applications are still open for this year’s event and interested participants can register online at www.etapecaledonia.co.uk, however if the spectator sport is more appealing, the local community has also embraced the event, organising a cycling festival to take place on the Saturday 16th May in nearby Aberfeldy.

The influx of cyclists and avid supporters from around the globe will give much needed muscle to the local economy of Highland Perthshire, that relies heavily on tourism spend to survive.

Jo Dytch, organiser, said “The Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia is fast becoming a unique, world class event, and much of that is to do with the stunning backdrop of the Perthshire landscape in which it is held.”

“This year we are undoubtedly building on our previously successful events of 2007 and 2008. I am really pleased to see that, in otherwise difficult economic circumstances, events such as the Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia give a much needed boost to rural businesses and tourism.” She concluded.
