Event for Event Organisers and Suppliers Goes Without a Hitch
Friday night saw the events industry gather at the Hilton, Glasgow to attend the 2009 Scottish Event Awards, organised by The Drum.
The event was attended by the elite of the Scottish events industry at a ceremony which is only in its second year and is designed to promote, reward and celebrate the growing and successful events industry here in Scotland. These awards bring together all areas from event managers, to organisers, to venues, to event suppliers and in house teams.
As Fran McIntyre, Managing Director of QD Events Ltd says
“The Scottish Event Awards are a celebration of everything that is great about the Scottish events industry. It’s fantastic to be recognised among our competitors, peers and colleagues for the effort we put into these events. We’ll definitely be back next year!”
Scooping the top awards were Cycling Scotland who won the Event Management Grand Prix for Pedal for Scotland, the Event Services Grand Prix went to the SECC and the Chairman’s Award was given to the Scottish Social Care Services for the Care Accolades.
Cycling Scotland Chief Executive Ian Aitken commented:
"I think the Scottish Event Awards play a vital role in highlighting the quality of events staged in Scotland, and it's great for all the people involved to get recognition for the hours and hours of behind the scenes work that go into staging successful events."
While the Chairman of the Haddington Pipe Band said
"To have been involved in the Scottish Event Awards has been inspiring for us - to see the calibre and the imagination of the events which are being created in Scotland is really terrific, and it is excellent that there is such a great showcase for the event management industry through this initiative”
Also picking up awards were The Go Group in Partnership with Axis Media Group for Best Business to Business Awards Scheme, the John Logie Baird Awards Programme; QD Events for The Main Event in Best Business to Business Exhibition and Best Leisure Exhibition for the Scottish Wedding Show.
Collecting the award for Corporate Hospitality was Match Point for Cricket Scotland and Glasgow Science Centre received the award for Best In-house Event for their food launch. Best Cultural Event went to Glasgow’s Concert Halls for Celtic Connections and Cycling Scotland won Best Sports Event. The award for Large Event was given to Glasgow Film Festival, Medium event to Haddington Pipe Band for Pipe Idol and Massed Band Parades and Queen Margaret University for The Green Fashion Award got Best Small Event.
The SECC not only scooped the Event Services Grand Prix but Best large Venue, while The Caves won Best Small Venue and Oran Mor took Best Unusual Venue. Best Caterer went to Ginger Snap, Technical Services Company to Northern Light and Event Services Supplier to Big House Events.
In the Marketing Awards categories, Best Marketing Strategy went to Volpa for The Enchanted Forest. Material Marketing & Communications picked up awards for Best PR Strategy for T in the Park and Best Use of Sponsorship for Bank of Scotland totalART. The Green Award was won by Maximillion; Best Traditional Event by Young Scott for Burns Resurrection. In Cause Related / Charity Event The Black and White Ball took the award and Duncan of Jordanstone College picked up the Best Educational Event Award for their degree show.
The event was a night full of celebration and entertainment as guests were piped into dinner by ‘And then there were 4’; youngsters from the Haddington Pipe Band who performed various songs on the bagpipes and signaled the start of the action-packed evening.
Up and coming Scottish comedian Kevin Bridges, who recently appeared on Michael Macintyre’s Comedy Roadshow warmed up the audience with 20 minutes of side splitting comedy before the presentation of awards began.
To end the show, ex Lord of the Dance performers ‘Rhythm of the Celts’ wowed the crowd with their magical and powerful Irish dance routine.
After a very successful event, this year’s Scottish Event Awards is over, but not for long. Entries for the 2010 awards will be open in March and more information is available at www.scottisheventawards.net
