Cycle Event Sell-Out could raise over £150,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support
A record 3500 people have signed up to take part in the UK’s only closed road cycle event – which could raise £150,000 for a leading cancer charity.
Every single space on the Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia has been snapped up by cyclists determined to take on the 81-mile course through Highland Perthshire in May.
A fantastic 950 of the cyclists have pledged to take part in the challenge to raise cash for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Among that group is 500 cyclists who have promised to raise at least £150 for Macmillan. Those riders alone will generate almost £90,000 for the charity, although Macmillan is hoping all 950 people who have a charity space will aim to raise at least £150 – which would generate almost £150,000.
And the charity is urging the other 2500 riders taking part in the Etape to sign up to join Team Macmillan as well.
Director of Macmillan Cancer Support Elspeth Atkinson said: “We are delighted that the Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia has been so popular. Many of those who have already signed up have said they will raise money for Macmillan and we are very grateful to them.
“However we want as many of the 3500 riders as possible to join Team Macmillan. Cycling 81-miles is an extremely challenging task, but it will be easier to get to the finish line if you are part of a team of hundreds of cyclists who are all taking part to raise money to help people affected by cancer.”
Interest in cycling in the UK is higher than it has ever been, following Chris Hoy’s sweeping wins at the 2008 Olympics and Mark Beaumont’s recent World record breaking success. The 81 mile cycle challenge, now in its third year, is set against the stunning backdrop of Highland Perthshire, and around 10,000 spectators are expected to flock to the area during the Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia weekend on 16th and 17th May.
This year, the event has featured as part of the Scottish Government’s Homecoming Scotland campaign with firm support from Event Scotland and Perth and Kinross Council, attracting top sponsors such as Macmillan Cancer Care, Highland Spring, Adidas, Powerbar, The Evening Standard, Cycling Plus, Women’s Fitness, Wiggle and Mavic.
Jo Dytch, IMG, said “I am delighted that we have reached capacity for the event and that so many of the participants have pledged to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.”
“We’re expecting this year’s event to really draw in the crowds of spectators and with record numbers participating we expect it to be a very busy weekend, and a great boost to the economy of Highland Perthshire.” She concluded.
