Extra Spaces for Sell-Out Etape: Macmillan Hopes Last 20 Spaces will raise £10,000
An extra 20 places have been released for the Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia – and organisers hope they’ll raise a massive £10,000 for people with cancer.
It was announced earlier this month that every space for the event had been snapped up with a record-breaking 3500 cyclists signing up for the event – the UK’s only closed road cycle.
But organisers IMG and Macmillan Cancer Support have announced they have a final 20 spaces available for cyclists who pledge to raise at least £500 for Macmillan.
The last minute slots are expected to be snapped up within days by cyclists desperate take part in the mammoth 81-mile bike ride through Highland Perthshire on May 17.
Director of Macmillan Cancer Support, Elspeth Atkinson, said: “We are delighted to be able to release these final 20 places. The Macmillan Caledonian Etape has been such a popular event and we know there are a lot of cyclists who wanted to take part but didn’t manage to get a space.
“I’m sure these last 20 places will be snapped up very quickly and of course as everyone who takes a place has to promise to raise at least £500 for Macmillan, we know these places will generate a massive £10,000 for people affected by cancer.”
IMG added: “
So far almost 1000 cyclists have signed up to complete the Etape for Macmillan and the charity are hoping to convince the other 2500 riders taking part in to join Team Macmillan as well.
Elspeth added added: “We are grateful to all those who are taking part in the Etape for Macmillan, however we want everyone taking part to join our team. Cycling 81-miles is an extremely challenging task, but it will be easier to get to the finish line if you are part of a team of hundreds of cyclists who are all taking part to raise money to help people affected by cancer.”
Macmillan hopes the Etape Caledonia will raise a fantastic £200,000 to fund its vital cancer services around Scotland. The cash could fund four Macmillan nurses for a year or pay for Macmillan’s CancerLine for five-months, helping around 17,000 people with cancer.
The Etape Caledonia, now in its third year, is set against the stunning backdrop of Highland Perthshire, and thousands of spectators are expected to flock to the area on the weekend of the event.
The Etape Caledonia is part of the Scottish Government’s Homecoming Scotland campaign with and has been supported by Event Scotland and Perth and Kinross Council. It has also attracted top sponsors including Adidas, Powerbar, The Evening Standard, Cycling Plus, Women’s Fitness, Wiggle and Mavic.
