Etape Caledonia proving a Magnet for Olympic Athletes
Hot on the heels of an announcement about Britain’s Alpine Ski Team’s participation in the Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia, the UK’s only closed road cycle challenge, organisers have announced that Royal Yachting Association’s Olympic Manager, Stephen Parks, originally from Glasgow, will also be returning to Scotland to race in the event.
The Olympic Manager says the 81-mile cycle, taking place on May 17, would be the perfect training challenge for his team as they prepare for the 2012 London Olympics.
“Sparky”, as he is affectionately known to his team mates will join a record-breaking 3500 riders to cycle through Highland Perthshire, taking in the stunning panorama of Queen’s View, and athletic climbs up the side of Schiehallion.
Stephen Parks, RYA Olympic manager, commented: “The Etape Caledonia is a fantastic event in one of my favourite places in the world. I have always been a huge fan of road cycling and it has become a large part of Skandia Team GBR’s off the water training programme. Highland Perthshire is a truly majestic area of Scotland and I am really looking forward to the opportunity to experience it on my bike.”
Director of Macmillan Cancer Support in Scotland, Elspeth Atkinson, said: “We are delighted that Stephen is taking part in the Macmillan Cancer Support Caledonian Etape. All of the money they raise will be used to fund our vital cancer services, from specialist nurses and doctors to advice and support for people who need financial help because of their cancer. “
“I would urge anyone who is registered to take part in the race to join Team Macmillan. You’ll be in fantastic company and will be helping people affected by cancer throughout Scotland. “
Jo Dytch, IMG, said: "This year’s event is certainly shaping up to be a star studded occasion and a fantastic opportunity to see some of the world’s greatest athletes up close. With 3500 cyclists taking part we are also expecting thousands spectators to flock to Pitlochry on Sunday 17th May and it promises to be a day to remember."
This year, Etape Caledonia has featured as part of the Scottish Government’s Homecoming Scotland campaign with firm support from Event Scotland and Perth and Kinross Council, attracting top sponsors such as Macmillan Cancer Care, Highland Spring, Adidas, Powerbar, The Evening Standard, Cycling Plus, Women’s Fitness, Wiggle and Mavic.
