Rio de Caledonia: Brazil’s Former Cycling Champ to Compete in Etape Caledonia
Former Brazilian Cycling Champion, Ricardo Nogare, now living in Edinburgh, will be returning to his beloved sport this weekend to compete in this Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia, starting in Pitlochry in Highland Perthshire.
Nogare, who left competitive cycling in 2000 following a knee injury, retrained as a management accountant and now works for HSBC in Edinburgh as a Global Senior Planning Analyst. He returned to the sport briefly in 2006, participating in Brazil’s Cycling Championships, and stealing the top place in the non-professional category.
His hopes for this year’s Etape Caledonia are ambitious, and the Brazilian is looking forward to enjoying the beautiful vistas and scenery that is unique to the route situated in Highland Perthshire.
“I think I can do well” said Ricardo, “I started training for the event a few weeks ago and I’m expecting to finish within a 4 hour time slot. If I think I have a chance of winning, I’ll definitely try to seize the title.”
Nogare will have to focus if he’s to claim the top prize, last year’s winner, Veli Raikkonen from Aberdeen’s Granite City Racing Team, finished in a staggering 3 hours, 38 minutes and 53 seconds.
Elspeth Atkinson, director of Macmillan Cancer Support in Scotland, said: “We are absolutely thrilled that Ricardo is taking part in the Macmillan Cancer Support Etape. It’s a mark of how highly this event is regarded that such a talented cyclist is taking part.”
The Etape Caledonia has experienced its most popular year to date with more than 3,500 people signed up to take part in the UK’s premium mass participation closed road race. Participants have yet again been drawn in by the stunning scenery of Highland Perthshire, with the route winding through the picturesque landscape.
