Etape Caledonia 2010 Registrations “Spike”
IMG, organisers of the Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia, have announced that they have received more than 1000 pre-registrations for their 2010 event, confirming that places are selling faster than ever before.

Etape Caledonia dominated the national news in May following an incident at the 2009 event that temporarily halted the race and damaged a number of cyclists’ bikes.

The advance registrations for 2010 include backing from a number of high profile teams who also participated in the 2009 event, including the Royal Air Force and members of the British Alpine Ski Team. Both teams have pledged to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, title partner of the event.

World record breaking cyclist, Mark Beaumont, who participated in the 2008 Etape Caledonia event, commented “The Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia is a brilliant addition to the cycling calendar. Closed road events for amateur riders, which are safer and bring huge value to rural areas, are already very popular in Europe and the Etape Caledonia is leading the way to bring this to the UK.”

Undaunted by the incident the organisers forged ahead with their plans to open entries for the 2010 as early as possible. In the 4 weeks following the 2009 event the organisers have sold the same number of places that took 5 months to fill for the sell out event that took place earlier this year.

With more than 50% of the 1000 cyclists who have already registered pledging to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, the 2010 event augurs well for the charity that has so far netted £260,000 of vital funds from its association with Etape Caledonia.

Ellie Whitfield, event co-ordinator at Macmillan Cancer Support commented, “Following the staggering success of this year’s event, we are absolutely thrilled that 1000 places in the 2010 Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia have already been snapped up! It’s going be even bigger and better in 2010 so I would urge anyone thinking about taking part, to be quick and sign up to join Team Mac now!”

Jo Dytch, event organiser with IMG, said “We are delighted to have the support of such world renowned cyclists like Mark Beaumont as well as so many high profile teams pledging to take part in next year’s event. Their fundraising efforts for Macmillan Cancer Support will also be greatly appreciated. We are however urging people interested in participating in next year’s challenge to register soon as, at this rate, places will fill up quickly.”
