Doing the Rounds: Local Doctor to do a “Virtual Ventoux” in St John’s Shopping Centre
Kinross GP, Dr Roddy Pattison, will be taking on “rounds” of a different kind this Friday, 3rd July, as he sets off on a “Virtual Ventoux” cycling fundraiser taking place in St John’s Shopping Centre, Perth, to raise vital funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Roddy first started his fundraising quest for Macmillan Cancer Support earlier this year, following the tragic death of a colleague from the disease.
Taking up training for the Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia event in Highland Perthshire, Roddy was initially discouraged by how unfit he was. His colleague, now sadly passed away, encouraged him in his training efforts and he hasn’t looked back since. He commented, “They really gave me the inspiration I needed to make it happen and for that I am truly grateful. Although they can’t be here to cheer me on in person, they are still very much with me in spirit and every penny raised will be going to Macmillan Cancer Support to deliver much needed services and support to others who are suffering from cancer.”
The fundraising event, which takes place in St John’s Shopping Centre this Friday, 3rd July from 10am – 4pm, also forms part of Roddy’s training for the ultimate cycling sportive, L’Etape du Tour, part of the Tour de France route.
This Friday, he hopes to replicate the distance covered by the route (172km), which runs from Montelimar to the summit of the fabled Mont Ventoux (1,912m/6,273ft), in 6 hours, on a static spinning cycle situated next to Coffee Republic in St John’s Shopping Centre.
He’s calling on members of the public to pop into the shopping centre on Friday to offer him their support and throw in a coin for Macmillan Cancer Support, with all funds raised to be donated to the Perth Appeal.
Roddy concluded, “It’s a fair challenge to cover 172km in just 6 hours but I think I can do it! I’d be delighted if members of the public drop in to give me words of support and encouragement. How do I like my coffee? A double espresso, with no sugar, thanks!”
